루벤아트파운데이션 컬렉션展

재단법인 햇빛담요는 리투아니아의 루벤아트파운데이션(Lewben Art Foundation) 컬렉션에 소장된 리투아니아와 라트비아 출신 작가들 작품들을 초청해 선보인다. 2010년 리투아니아의 금융기업 루벤기업은(Lewben Group)은 제2차 세계대전 중에 전 세계로 흩어진 리투아니아 디아스포라 예술가들의 작품을 환수하기 위한 모금활동을 시작하였고, 2013년 루벤 그룹의 빌리우스 카발리아우스카스(Vilius Kavaliauskas)회장과 그의 아내 리타 카발리아우스키엔(Rita Kavaliauskien)은 후원자 및 컬렉터들과 힘을 합쳐 300여명 아티스트의 1500여점 이상의 작품을 대중에게 공개하기 위해 루벤아트파운데이션을 설립하였다. 루벤 컬렉션은 현재 동유럽 최대 프라이빗 컬렉션으로 성장하였으며, 재단은 젊은 작가들을 위해 미술 프로젝트를 후원하고 개최하면서 예술 저변 확대에 힘쓰고 있다. 2015년 부터 동유럽과 북유럽 최대 규모 아트페어인 아트 빌뉴스(Art Vilnius) 공식 스폰서이며, 이들이 후원한 리투아니아 파빌리온이 2019년 제 58회 베니스 비엔날레에서 황금 사자상을 수상하면서 글로벌 미술계의 이목을 집중시켰다. 또한 루벤재단은 artnews.lt, artbooks.lt, Echo Gone Wrong 과 같은 예술매체와 출판사업도 병행하고 있다.

발트 예술 정체성의 뿌리는 유럽적 기반이며, 발트의 국가들은 오랜 시간 북유럽과 서유럽의 영향 아래 있었다. 중세시대 이래 독일과 로우 컨트리(Low Countries: 벨기에, 네덜란드)는 라트비아의 미술에 많은 영향을 주었다. 반면 폴란드와 인접한 리투아니아의 예술은 고딕양식과 비잔틴양식이 주를 이뤘으며 특히 수도 빌뉴스의 예술과 건축에는 이탈리아의 색채가 강하게 드러난다. 소비에트 연방 시기에도 러시아의 아방가르드 미술과 달리 이들 예술의 존재 방식은 정치적 체제에 적극적으로 저항하기보다, 가장, 비닉, 타협, 교섭 등 다채로운 방법을 통해 사회속에 공존함으로써 예술의 공존을 유지했다. 지리적 특성과 역사적으로 급격한 변화를 경험한 발트지역은 이념, 생태, 경제에 관련된 사회 문제에 핵심 교차로이며 새로운 세대의 예술가들은 동시대 시점을 단순히 과거의 연장선으로 생각하는 개념에서 탈피해 지금의 순간과 인간 사고의 지평이 상호 탐지해 나가는 과정을 제안한다.

루벤아트파운데이션과 햇빛담요재단의 지속적인 협력이 우리에게는 큰 의미가 있다. 2021년 협력한 ‘발트 3국 특별전’을 시작으로, 본 전시는 국제 미술 시장에서 주목받는 젊은 발트 작가들의 작품을 서울에서 선보이며, 두 재단의 가교 역할을 할 것이다. 2023년 빌뉴스에 루벤아트센터가 오픈 예정이며, 햇빛담요재단과 협력해 한국의 아티스트들을 리투아니아에 소개하게 될 것이다.

LEWBEN ART FOUNDATION COLLECTION 展

Sun Blanket Foundation presents artworks by young artists from Lithuania and Latvia, collected by Lewben Art Foundation. Lewben Group, a Lithuanian financial association, launched a fundraising campaign in 2010 with hopes of recovering the dispersed artworks by Lithuanian diaspora artists during World War II. And in 2013, the CEO of Lewben Group, Vilius Kavaliauskas, and his wife, Rita Kavaliauskien, with the support of sponsors and collectors, established Lewben Art Foundation for the sole purpose of exhibiting over 1,500 artworks by about 300 artists. The Lewben Collection has now grown to be the largest private collection in all Eastern Europe and strives to expand the ground for art by sponsoring and holding projects for young artists. The official sponsor of the largest art fair in Eastern and Northern Europe titled Art Vilnius since 2015, and through the sponsored Lithuanian Pavilion’s winning the Golden Lion Award at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, Lewben Art Foundation received quite an attention from the global art community. It also engages in art media and publishing industries as artnews.lt, artbooks.lt, Echo Gone Wrong, etc. The identity of Baltic art is rooted in Europe, for Baltic countries have long been under the influence of Northern and Western Europe.

Since the Middle Ages, Germany, and the Low Countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg) have heavily influenced Latvian Art, while the art of Lithuania, a country adjacent to Poland, was mainly consisted of Gothic and Byzantine style, with especially the art and architecture of Vilnius showing palpable Italian influence. Even during the Soviet Union days, its method of existence was unlike the Russian avant-garde art; Maintaining coexistence in the society by attempting various ways such as disguise, concealment, compromise, negotiation, etc., rather than actively resisting the political regime. Having regularly gone through drastic changes due to its geographical and historical characteristics, the Baltic region is the key intersection where social issues of ideology, ecology, and economy cross each other, and suggests that the human values and the current moment mutually scope out one another.

The continued cooperation between Lewben Art Foundation and Sun Blanket Foundation holds a significant meaning to us. Started with our first collaborated work in 2021 titled “The Special Exhibition of the Three Baltic Nations”, this exhibition introducing to Seoul the works of young and globally acclaiming artists of the Baltic art community shall serve as the bridge between the two private foundations. Lewben Art Center is to open in Vilnius in 2023, and Korean artists will be introduced to Lithuania with cooperation by Sun Blanket Foundation.
