《색채와 형태, 10인의 슬로바키아 작가》

1987년, 서울 올림픽공원의 가장 높은 곳에 세워진 약 9미터 높이의 거대한 화강암 조각상은 바로 슬로바키아의 유명한 조각가인 죠제프 얀코빅(Jozef Jankovič)의 작품이다. 같은 시기에 그의 조각작품인 <세바스찬 Sebastian>(1987, 화강암과 청동)은 한국의 국립현대미술관(Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art)에 소장된 바 있다. 본 전시는 이처럼 지속적으로 이어져 온 한국과 슬로바키아 문화 교류의 유산을 잇는 기회로 마련되었다.

본 전시는 1980년대 슬로바키아 미술계에 혜성처럼 등장했던 젊은 작가 10인의 작품을 선보인다. 이 작가들은 초기 작품부터 놀라울 만큼 활기 넘치는 표현력과 강력한 생동감을 보여주었다. 회화 작가들은 다양한 범위의 주제 선택, 폭넓은 색감의 사용을 통해 생동감 넘치는 구조적, 표현적 회화의 길을 개척했고, 조각가들은 재료에 대한 새로운 이해를 바탕으로 조각의 새 지평을 열어나갔다.

그들의 작품은 표현력과 서정성, 시적 요소와 극적 요소의 선명한 대비를 보여주었으며, 미지의 경계와 신비로움을 담고 있다. 이렇듯 실재하는 형태에서 기호, 혹은 원형으로 응축된 형태에 이르기까지, 예술적 표현의 새로운 형태를 찾기 위한 열망에서 비롯된 개념미술의 선구라고 할 수 있다. 물론 1990년대 초 변화된 역사적, 사회적 상황 가운데 자유롭게 이뤄진 예술적 시도들은 각기 다르게 전개 되지만, 오늘날 그들은 당시 세대를 대표하는 작가들임이 틀림없다. 그들은 슬로바키아와 다른 나라들에서 수십 회의 전시회를 개최하였으며, 그들의 작품들은 다양한 공공 및 사적 컬렉션에 포함되어 있다. 또한 이들 중 상당수는 슬로바키아 시각예술가협회(Association of Visual Artists in Slovakia)의 일원으로 활동하는 등 결속력을 보여주고 있기도 하다.

전시에 참여하는 작가들은 사실적인 묘사, 양식화된 묘사, 시적인 상상력이 돋보이는 표현적이고 극적이고 추상적인 묘사 등 다양한 방식을 통해 자신의 개성을 드러낸다. 또한 새로운 영감의 원천을 찾기 위해서 역사와 문학을 참조하거나, 인간적으로, 혹은 사회적으로 중요한 동시대의 주제를 탐구하기도 하고, 현대인들의 가장 내밀한 감정의 복잡성에 주목하기도 한다.

스베토자르 일랍스키(Svetozár Ilavský)는 자신의 사적인 감정 상태와 인간 존재의 보편적인 특성을 분석하고, 여기에 숨겨진 연관성을 찾는 다재다능하고 창조적인 예술가이다. 그의 작품들은 다층적인 비유, 인용, 그리고 비유 속에 숨겨진 미래에 대한 신비한 시각을 담고있다. 뛰어난 인물 화가이자 이야기꾼인 피터 폴라크(Peter Pollág)는 풍부한 비유, 그리고 은유와 상징의 독특한 힘을 사용하여 그의 이야기에 영원한 중요성을 부여한다. 이반 파블레(Ivan Pavle)는 역사적 시대와 고대 문화의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나든다. 그는 역사적 상황을 좌우했던 이야기들의 내면에 존재하는 인간 존재의 본질과 삶의 법칙의 모호하고도 뚜렷한 진실을 밝혀낸다. 알렉세이 보이타셰크(Alexej Vojtášek)의 작품에서는 상징성과 풍부한 색채 구성이 두드러진다. 그는 사실적인 묘사로부터 원형과 기호, 추상의 경계를 넘나드는 표현에 이르기까지 다양한 형태의 작품을 선보인다. 얀 흘라바테(Ján Hlavatý)는 서예적 요소, 글자, 다른 기호, 인물의 윤곽을 그의 작품에 도입한다. 슈테판 폴락(Štefan Polák)은 색채가 지닌 표현력을 최대한 활용한다. 그의 작품은 시적 상상력과 마술적 사실주의의 원리를 혼합한 것으로, 앵포르멜적* 요소가 두드러지는 것이 특징이다. 오토 바초리크(Oto Bachorík)의 조각은 서정적이지만, 동시에 표현적이고 강력하다. 오토 바초리크의 작품에서 나타나는 둥글고 원형적인 선은 신비와 미지의 느낌을 불러일으킨다. 이고르 모스니(Igor Mosný)의 나무 조각상에 새겨진 상징과 은유의 언어는 고대부터 현재까지, 천년 가까이 지속된 유럽의 역사적 발전을 암호화한다. 유라지 추텍(Juraj Čutek)은 나무와 레디메이드(ready-made, 기성품) 금속 오브제를 결합한 조각상으로 잘 알려져있다. 그는 역사와 문학에서 영감을 얻고, 위대한 인물들을 묘사하며, 우리 지구의 황폐화에 대응한다. 그의 작품은 많은 연상과 아이디어를 불러일으킨다. 밀란 루카치(Milan Lukáč)는 또한 청동이나 용접된 철을 아상블라주(assemblage, 일상적인 대상을 한 화면에 조합하여 새로운 느낌을 불러일으키는 기법)하여 완성된 조각 작품이 시대를 초월한 아름다움을 가지도록 유도한다. 역동적으로 부유하는 그의 작품에서 나타나는 인간, 혹은 동물의 모습은 작품이 지닌 힘을 상기하도록 한다.

슬로바키아의 동시대 시각 예술은 작가들의 개별적인 예술적 시도, 양식, 그리고 그들의 개인적인 성취로 대표되며, 그 가운데 특히나 젊은 작가들의 예술적 기여가 두드러진다. 이러한 젊은 작가들의 성취는 물론 슬로바키아 미술의 발전 과정에서 중요한 역할을 했던 1960년대와 1970년대 활동했던 작가들이 정치적 제약이 존재했음에도 불구하고 보여주었던 혁신적인 시도에 기인하며, 그들의 작품 또한 주목할 만하다. 무엇보다도 우리는 이 세대의 예술, 그들의 그림의 활기찬 색채와 그들의 조각의 진정한 형태, 특히 다양한 해석을 제공하는 그들의 작품의 강력한 메시지가 한국 관객들에게 닿아, 그들이 슬로바키아의 문화적 유산과 역사를 더욱 가깝게 느끼게 되기를 바란다.

2023년은 슬로바키아가 수립되고, 슬로바키아와 한국이 국교를 맺은 지 30년이 되는 해이자 슬로바키아 시각예술가 협회가 창립된 지 30주년이 되는 해이다. 전시에 참여하는 작가들과 슬로바키아 시각예술가 협회를 대표하여, 이 특별한 기회를 주신 햇빛담요재단과 아트코너H 갤러리, 주한 슬로바키아 공화국 대사관 및 기타 관계자들에게 감사를 전하는 바이다. 본 전시를 통해 한국의 모든 관람객이 뜻 깊은 예술적 경험을 하기를 바란다.

Colour & Form. Ten Slovak Artists

In 1987, the most distinguished Slovak sculptor Jozef Jankovič created a monumental, 9-metre-high granite sculpture Place at the Top for the Olympic Park in Seoul. At the same time, his sculpture Sebastian (1987. Granite and bronze) was included in the Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art collection. We are delighted that this exhibition continues to present the artistic legacy of Slovakia.

The Colour & Form exhibition shows the work of ten artists who arrived on the Slovak art scene in the 1980s and appeared especially at exhibitions of young artists. From the very beginning, their work showed surprising spontaneity and enormous vitality. The painters introduced a wide range of new subject matter, colour, and exuberant structural or gestural painting, whereas the sculptors showed a new understanding of the sculptural material. Their works offered a stark contrast between expressiveness and lyricism, poetry and drama, leaning towards the boundaries of the unknown and the mysterious. The search for new forms of artistic expression developed from the real shape to the boundaries of sign and archetype towards various positions of abstraction, and later Conceptual art was at the forefront of their ambition. Although further development in a more welcoming atmosphere of artistic freedom at the beginning of the 1990s continued in different directions, today, they belong to the prominent and successful representatives of their generation. They have had dozens of exhibitions in Slovakia and abroad, and their works are included in many public and private collections. Almost all of them are members of the Society of Slovak Artists and continue to produce works of art. Moreover, they are united by a close friendship and friendly rivalry.

The exhibition showcases a selection from a wide scope of individual artist programmes ranging from realistic to stylised and poetic-imaginative in addition to expressive-dramatic and abstract positions. Looking for new sources of inspiration, the artists draw on historical and literary stories and respond to human, socially important current themes as well as to those associated with the complexity of the innermost feelings of contemporary people.

Svetozár Ilavský is a multi-talented and extraordinarily creative artist who analyzes his own emotional world and finds hidden connections with human existence. Many of his works can be perceived as a mysterious vision of the future concealed in complex paraphrases, appropriation, and analogy.

An excellent figure painter and storyteller, Peter Pollág uses the unique power of metaphors and symbols in addition to imaginative parables, lending his stories eternal importance.

Ivan Pavle crosses the boundaries of historical periods and ancient cultures, freely using their elements. He tells the stories that determined the course of history, exposing with the same passion the essence of the human soul and searching for the truth about the unknown laws of life in parables.

Symbolism and a rich colour scheme characterise the work of Alexej Vojtášek. His artistic expression ranges from real shapes through archetypes and signs to the borders of abstraction.

The leaning towards abstraction is fully reflected in the exuberant paintings of Ján Hlavatý. He occasionally introduces calligraphic elements, lettering, different signs, and outlines of figures into his compositions.

Štefan Polák makes the most of the impressive power of colour. His work blends the principles of poetic imagination and magical realism, marked by Art informel and Lyrical abstraction elements.

The sculptures of Oto Bachorík are lyrical, yet at the same time expressive and robust. Their round and archetypal lines evoke the feeling of mystery and the unknown.

Igor Mosný’s appealing language of symbols and metaphors expressed in the monumental female heads rendered in wood encodes the millennia of historical development from ancient times in Europe to the present.

Juraj Čutek carves sculptures in wood, integrating them into a unique whole with found metal objects. He draws inspiration from history and literature, portrays great figures, and responds to the devastation of our planet. His work evokes many associations and ideas.

Milan Lukáč also uses the poetry and timeless beauty of found metal objects, combining them with bronze or welded iron in assemblage. His human and animal figures levitating in the air in bold curves are full of movement and dynamism and spread important messages. 

Slovak contemporary visual art is represented by a broad spectrum of dynamically developing personalities, artistic phenomena, styles, and individual achievements, but also generational tendencies and the artistic contribution of young people in particular. Without any exaggeration, however, we can say that the exhibiting artists, today in their 60s and 70s, played an important role in the process of the development of Slovak art from the constraints of the political doctrines of the past towards the current unrestricted artistic expression, and their work is still relevant and remarkable. We believe that the art of this generation, the vibrant colours of their paintings and authentic forms of their sculptures, but especially the powerful message of their works offering a variety of interpretations, will appeal to the Korean audience and introduce them to the cultural wealth and history of our distant country.

Thirty years since the establishment of the Slovak Republic and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Slovak Republic and the Republic of Korea also mark the thirtieth anniversary of the foundation of the Society of Slovak Artists, which represents the work of its members.
