《No Where, But There : Ieva Trinkunaite》 

 

햇빛담요재단은 2021년에 이어 리투아니아 작가 이바 트린쿠나이테(Ieva Trinkunaite)의 두번째 개인전 ‘No Where, But There : 이바 트린쿠나테’를 통해 작가의 신작 12점을 선보인다. 본 전시는 판화와 드로잉을 주 매체로 삼았던 작가가 유화를 통해 작업세계의 스펙트럼을 확장하는 첫 시도이자, 가본 적 없는 장소에 대한 노스탤지어(Nostalgia)를 불러내는 서정적인 풍경화를 만날 수 있는 기회다.

 

특히 작가의 신작들은 판화와 드로잉의 기법을 유화에 접목시켜 전통적인 회화와 판화의 경계를 넘나든다. 판을 완성해서 찍어보기 전에는 완성된 작품을 예상하기 어려운 판화와 달리, 질감과 색감을 즉각적으로 확인할 수 있는 유화는 그녀가 지금까지 선보여 온 드로잉의 특성과 닮아있다. 판화에 사용되는 스크래퍼나 바늘을 사용한 듯, 얇고 섬세한 붓터치와 거친 질감은 그녀의 작품을 일반적인 유화와 구별짓는다.

 

그녀의 이전 작품들이 거대한 환경과 인간이나 동물과 같은 개별적인 존재들을 강렬하게 대비하며 ‘숭고 sublime’의 미학을 느끼게 했다면, 신작들은 ‘가보지 않은, 낯선 곳’에 발을 딛는 인간의 감각 자체에 집중한다. <Everyone gathered to listen>(2022), <Somewhere near the equator>(2022) 등 그녀의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 이전보다 크게, 훨씬 분명하게 묘사된다. 반면 <Newfoundlands>(2022), <Equator at night>(2022)와 같은 작품에서 등장하는 동물들은 얼굴 부분만 확대되어 나타나는데, 이것은 타인으로 대치될 수 있는 동물들과 눈을 맞춤으로써 타인과 세상을 이해하길 원하는 작가의 바람이 드러난 것이다.

 

탄탄한 드로잉 실력을 기반으로 판화와 유화를 넘나드는 이바의 실험적 시도는 동시대 미술에서 판화라는 매체가 비평의 기반으로 삼는 원본-복제본의 위계 질서 타파를 넘어서서, ‘타인에 대한 공감과 이해’라는 작가의 메시지를 다양한 층위에서 전달하고자 하는 보다 상위의 목표로 연결된다. 이바의 작품은 리투아니아-한국이라는 지리적, 문화적 차이에도 불구하고 어디선가 본 것만 같은, 그리운 풍경을 선사한다는 점에서 특별하다. 본 전시를 통해 작가의 확장된 작업 세계와 깊어진 메시지를 관람객들이 느껴볼 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Following 2021, Ieva Trinkunaite’s second solo exhibition ‘No where But There’ with Sun Blanket Foundation in Korea includes over 12 new works, oil painting, drawing and printmaking, encompassing her varied multimedia practice. The exhibition marks the first foray into oil painting of artist who use primary medium of printmaking and drawing and features lyrical landscape paintings that evoke a sense of nostalgia for places we have never visited.
 

In particular, her new works incorporate techniques from printmaking and drawing into oil painting, blurring the lines between traditional painting and printmaking. Unlike printmaking, where it is difficult to anticipate the finished work until the plate is completed and stamped, oil paintings, where texture and color are immediately visible, resemble the characteristics of her drawings. Her unique technique that thin, delicate brushstrokes and rough texture as well as the use of a scraper or needle in copperplate printing, distinguish her paintings from conventional oil paintings.
 

While her previous works evoked an aesthetic of the sublime, with strong contrasts between the vastness of nature and individual beings such as humans and animals, her new works focus on the human sensation of stepping into an unexplored, unfamiliar place. The figures in her works, such as <Everyone gathered to listen (2022)> and <Somewhere near the equator(2022)>, are larger and more clearly delineated than before. On the other hand, the animals in works such as <Newfoundlands (2022)> and <Equator at night (2022)> appear with only their faces enlarged, revealing the artist's desire to understand others and the world by making eye contact with animals that could be replaced by others.

 

Based on her fluent drawing skills, her experimental attempts to move between printmaking and oil painting lead to a higher goal of conveying the artist's message of empathy and understanding of others on various levels, beyond breaking of the original-replica hierarchy that the medium of printmaking is the basis of criticism in contemporary art. Ieva's work is special in that it presents nostalgic landscapes that feel like they have been seen before, despite the geographical and cultural differences between Lithuania and Korea. Through this exhibition, visitors will be able to experience the artist's expanded body of work and deepened message.
